"Transformation of nature into Art... reveals and
awakens the inner eye and inner reality"
Joseph Campbell

ARTIST'S
STATEMENT
My work is a metaphor of personal cosmology. It
represents a place between two worlds, a place of
transformation and a point of balance between opposites
such as the unconscious vs. conscious, culture vs. nature
life vs. death, feminine vs. masculine, sky vs. earth, and
earth vs. water. A sense of energy is created by vibrating
colors, sensuous texture, and the contrast of light against
dark and mysterious depths. through the synthesis of such
media and collage, pigments, found objects and color copy
prints I have developed a method by which I have been able to
contain and express the force and passion of my view of nature
and the primal energy that moves life. The therne that
underpins my work is the primal source of life/nature that and
its cycles of birth, growth, death, and rebirth. This pattern of
life is an ancient story of mystery, transformation, renewal and
redemption. I feel that I am a conduit through which this
ancient story and these themes of nature flow and are
translated into my paintings. Paintings which reveal another
truth and reality different but parallel to our daily lives.

Jan received both her BFA and MA from Michigan State University. In addition she has lived and studied in Northern Italy for three years.
She has continued to study and travel in order to delve deeper into other cultures. Of particular interest to her has been an almost twenty year study and travel to ancient sacred sites around the world, in such places as Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Cornwall England, the Island of Malta, Cambodia, Burma, Bali, Prehistoric sites in Brittany France, and Ireland. Visiting and studying these sites have both inspired and informed her artwork of mix media. Her interests in these ancient sites awakened her to the mystery and beauty of the symbols that are carved and painted at these sites and how in some ways they are embedded in our culture.
Her hope is to uncover some part of their meaning and to express it visually, helping to create a new visual mythology for our fast changing culture.
